In the manual it looks like network firmware can only be updated via the network cable, not usb port.

It seems that only the printer firmware can be installed via USB connection the network firmware generates an error from update tool. The gotcha is this: there are 2 firmware files, the printer firmware and the network firmware.

The printers display shows 'firmware update status' so update is indeed goig through. I can howerver update firmware via the 'firmware Updater' that was installed as part of the driver. The firmware update tool linked above is missing a dll file, so it does not run.

It's possible, in the end, that you just fried your ethernet port.
